Learning

At Highgate, our curriculum ensures learning is engaging, stimulating and relevant to the needs of our children.

At Highgate Primary Academy, we offer a knowledge-rich curriculum. Our intention is to share powerful knowledge on behalf of society so we teach our pupils what they need to know to make sense of and to improve the world. (Myatt 2018).
Our pedagogical approach includes referring to subjects by their specific name rather than ‘topic’ etc. The repetition of factual information is carefully built into sequences of lessons to enable knowledge to be built on knowledge and commitment to long-term memory. Explicit reference to prior knowledge and ensuring pupils understand what they are learning, why and how it fits into the ‘bigger picture’. Our pupils will be encouraged to ask probing questions and to become critical thinkers. Assessment of the Foundation subjects is ‘quiz-like’ and includes key facts, dates, timelines, specific terminology which are set out in Knowledge Organisers. Children will be encouraged to talk about what they have learned and will produce writing and artwork linked to demonstrate their new knowledge.
